I live in a conservation area; can I still convert my loft?
Houses in conservation areas and the environment itself have a special charm that adds to the beauty and preserves the history of the area. Sadly, this makes it difficult to carry out a renovation. You must apply for planning permission from the Brighton planning authority before carrying out a loft conversion.
Permission will be subject to certain conditions. Considerations include the impact on parking, noise, the roofline, loss of light, nature conservation and privacy. Failure to get approval or carrying out a loft conversion without approval is a criminal offence that carries a hefty fine of up to £10,000 or more.
